Fadel Abdulghany, Executive Director of SNHR, said: “What Israel is doing in Syria is an escalating pattern of incursions and de facto occupation of parts of Syrian territory, aerial and ground attacks, detentions, and damage to the property and livelihoods of civilians. These practices constitute a grave violation of the sovereignty of Syria, they aggravate the state of instability in Syria and the region, and they feed cycles of tension and violence, thus raising the risk of sliding into wider confrontations in a region already suffering from accumulated conflicts.
“Israel may not invoke security concerns in order to justify the imposition of military realities inside the territory of another state, or the overriding of the rules of international law. Security isn’t achieved by violating the sovereignty of states, nor by expanding occupation, nor by exposing civilians to danger. The continuation of these operations, in the absence of an effective international response, entrenches the logic of imposing a fait accompli by force, and undermines the legal order that prohibits the use of force and protects civilians during armed conflicts.”
