“I’ve been holding my tears for fourteen years.” Ecstasy and agony for families of Syria’s disappeared.

“I’ve been holding my tears for fourteen years.” Ecstasy and agony for families of Syria’s disappeared.

Families wait inside Sednaya Prison, known locally as an Assad regime "slaughterhouse".

The unravelling of the brutal Assad regime prompted celebrations and hope this week in Syria. But horror quickly followed for families and friends, searching for their loved ones who’d been ‘disappeared’, arrested and tortured. Syria’s human rights network says it’s likely as many as 90 percent of the 130 thousand citizens imprisoned by the regime are dead.
